Narrow white
glacier snow or cloud
or both
either.
Up in the clouds or.. down in the clouds
Day 9 ….one bald eagle, two whales., porpoises … white seals dozing on grey rocks .. harbour seals, sea lions, sea otters , one small bear in the distance
The glacier calves with a crash
ice falls into the water
the story of the beginning of the end
It was all ice those hundreds of thousands years ago
now dark grey swathes of landslide
before green emerges..
The clouds come … almost .down to the sea
Japanese clouds or scenery – a generic phrase that nevertheless says a lot everything

Miscellaneous conversations observations:
Our room steward loaned me his plug to charge my phone.
The stewardess on Vietnam air loaned me her plug to charge my phone.
Kindness of strangers.

It’s Friday.”
“I’m so tired from doing nothing”
We commented on how quiet it was today. The cafe attendant said, “That’s how I like it. I can offer better service.”
The milkshake bar in Homer Alaska,
May I have a skimmed milkshake?
We have no milk.
On the ship I fell in love three times
With writers, authors of books I read on the ship
All dead
Heaven
The enjoyment not being sure of what time it is and so what, on not knowing where we are, nowhere at sea, a new approach to time and ..being..nothing to do..get up get dressed have breakfast…walk around, lie down, read, look at the sea..open to inner with so little / less outer..
The best meditation was watching the sky, the clouds move up and down in the mirror reflecting the light from the door. As the ship rolled slightly, side to side, the sky moved up and down. Meditation.
‘Succeeded’ in doing a lot of nothing, reassessing time, changing routines of all sorts- tea, coffee, meals, naps. Removed from ‘socialising’, didn’t look at others’ paintings, heard no lectures, minimal conversations with 970 people, as I pondered seeing someone and then never again, or a couple of dreary forgettables several times. No urge to find or connect, will I regret? Probably not.
Something new about focus.
And the other ‘meditation’ – the watercolour class. I can’t draw, I can’t paint, I only do occasional abstract somethings. And here I was, every day at sea, at 9.30 for 10 in a class told to copy the painting of a bear, a glacier, Mt Fuji, a geisha and more, No, I can’t. Yes I can, and I did .
(I don’t want to paint the bear and I will.) Never have I been is bad at something I am no good at doing and enjoyed it so much. A truly enlightening experience. Unexpected and fun! Who’d have guessed?
